Maru Sushi & Korean Grill | History

In the Spring of 2000, Soon, a Korean immigrant, passionate about her country's cuisine, and masterful in the culinary art of Korean food, shared her craft with Omaha, and Han Kuk Kwon was born. The name translates literally to Korean Restaurant, and for the past ten years, the tiny restaurant in southwest Omaha has become synonymous with great Korean cuisine for the entire region.

Come February, 2010, after 10 years of success serving only the best Korean dishes, Soon, along with help from her only daughter Joyeon resolved that it was time to expand.

The word “maru” has distinct but overlapping meanings in Korean and Japanese.

In traditional Korean homes, maru is the wooden table at the center of the dining room, the playroom and the living room where friends and family gather. In Japanese, it means "circle." And I'm told that when they're talking about a nice person, Koreans say that "her personality is a circle."

Those meanings mingle, along with food from both cultures, at the new Maru Sushi Korean Grill — the expanded, renewed and rechristened version of Han Kuk Kwan Korean restaurant.
